ABOUT

Amrita's father’s job took them from place to place,

relocating several times,

exploring various urban and rural regions

in the state of Maharashtra, India. 

 

As her outlook continued to broaden,

so did the urge to understand people,

their distinctive quests

and their unique attempts to celebrate life.

​

The journey of a curious young girl who wondered at the changing backdrops of the

varied locations,

resulted in following her intrinsic nature,

her artistic inclination,

discovering an unconventional path with unpredictable twists and turns.

​

Amrita Mahadik is an award winning Filmmaker and a gifted Singer.

She has composed music 

and produced her audio-visual productions as DESMALHAR.

​

In her childhood days, constant migration and limited exposure taught Amrita two things,

never miss an opportunity to learn a new art form

and respect each art form as a medium of expression.

Be it drawing, music, dance, theater or writing.

​

Much later, when destiny brought her to the city of Pune and things started unfolding gradually, 

these experiences and understanding came in handy.

​

As a a multi talented person with an eclectic range of interests, Amrita has donned multiple hats while producing some of her projects.

​

Her multifaceted personality and interdisciplinary approach has enabled her to understand the interrelation between various art forms,

be it Performing Arts, Visual Arts or Spatio-Temporal Art.

​

​

Amrita holds a Bachelor's degree in Arts, specializing in Hindustani Classical Vocal Music,

from Savitribai Phule Pune University’s 'Center for Performing Arts' (Lalit Kala Kendra).

​

As a listener, she has a ravenous appetite for different genres of Music, but while performing, she is at ease with Semi-classical and light music. 

 

She holds a Master's degree in Communication Studies, specializing in Video Production from

the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University

 

and a Post Graduate Diploma in ‘Film Editing’

from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

​

As a part of her one year Foundation Diploma at the M.G.M. college of Fine Arts,

Nanded,

she internalized the fine nuances of Drawing and Painting.

This knowledge has contributed greatly in her journey as a filmmaker.

 

Her first documentary ‘Desire of the Moth’ on the Pune based Artiste Shakuntala Patade was critically acclaimed. Since then she has continued to direct and edit many more of such projects, fiction and non-fiction.

 

This includes

‘Vyomagami’, a documentary based on the life and work of senior Bharatanatyam Exponent, Sangeet Natak Academy Awardee, Dr Sucheta Bhide Chapekar;

'Comrade Shanta Ranade' a documentary based on senior activist, social worker and writer

late Comrade Shanta Ranade;

and

'Limbu-Mirchi' music video on the song 'Kathagaan' by Bollywood band Kailasa.

Amrita is a member of the Screen Writers’ Association (SWA), Mumbai

and

 Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), Mumbai.​

​
